I am the fly guy. That best described me for the past ten years. But what does that mean? Well, I have a bachelor’s in Biology from the University of Groningen. My major was in Behavioural Neuroscience, but I really fell in love with the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster. This is how I ended up spending all of my spare time volunteering research with this crazy little fly. I love presenting and talking about the fly whenever I get the chance. During my master’s in Behavioural and Cognitive Neurosciences Research my passion for fly science, but especially for sharing it, grew. So slowly but surely, I have spent more time presenting, filming, animating, photographing, and writing about science. Whatever opportunity I see to share science with the world, I take it.
During the 4-ish years of my PhD in Chemical Ecology and Pest Management of yet another fly (Wageningen University), I realised that this passion for sharing is my main drive. I love capturing and sharing science. At first I thought Science Journalism was the answer, but I quickly realiese that my passion has always been in working with students and teaching. So currently I’m active as a teacher of applied biology at the HAS Green Academy. So far so good :)
The HAS is kindly supporting me in my attempt to finish op my PhD dissertation. Which I have picked up after a three-ish year hiatus. Can’t wait to finally finish that chapter of my life.
